Let’s talk about grounding
We hear people refer to grounding a lot these days and it’s not just walking barefoot in the garden. Try these simple techniques this week and see how you feel by the end of the week. Do you feel less stressed? Do you have a bit more energy? Are you sleeping better?
What is grounding?
Grounding, or earthing, is when we connect to the earth's energy. Think of the earth like a big battery with a natural electrical charge. When someone is grounded, they feel centered, solid, strong, balanced, and less tense or stressed.
Grounding techniques to try each day this week
Put your hands in water
Pay attention to the temperature and sensation on your fingertips, palms, and the backs of your hands. Does it feel consistent across each part of your hand? Begin with warm water, then switch to cold. Afterward, start with cold water and then switch to warm. Notice if there's a difference in sensation when transitioning from cold to warm compared to warm to cold.
Conscious breathing
Soften your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply in and out through the nose. Feel each breath filling your lungs and note how it feels to push it back out.
Savour a taste
Take small bites or sips of a food or beverage you enjoy, noticing how it tastes, smells, and how the flavor lingers on your tongue. It is even better if this is a root vegetable grown in the earth.
Go for a walk
Go for a short walk and concentrate on your steps.
Listen to the sound your steps make as they touch the ground beneath you. Notice the rhythm of your footsteps and how it feels to put your foot on the ground and then lift it again.
Feel your body
Sitting or standing, focus on how your body feels from head to toe, slowly noticing each part. Feel the weight of the clothing on your skin, can you feel your heartbeat, or does your stomach feel full? Notice how your body feels against the surface you are sitting or standing on and the temperature of the room around you. Take your time to notice every detail you can.
Be barefoot
Place the soles of your feet on the earth, close your eyes, and clear your mind. Imagine roots growing from your feet, down through the earth to its core. Allow the earth's energy to draw out the negative and replace it with good, positive energy. Give thanks and carry on with your day.
Self care
Create boundaries and energetic protection. Be mindful of your diet and your thoughts. Speak kindly to yourself and engage in activities that light you up and make you feel whole. consider using affirmations, such as 'I am worthy of good things, I matter,' and ‘I am enough’.
